How to Build a Log Cabin Playhouse

Published on | Log Homes | Coleman Kelleghan

If you have kids, at some point they'll likely ask you to build them a playhouse. Sure, you could do it the easy way, and tell them to build a fort out of whatever they can find outside. Or, you can go all out and create a gorgeous, log cabin playhouse that will last decades. If you decide on the latter, keep the following tips in mind when you're creating a log playhouse.

Prepping the Ground

When you're creating a playhouse, it's going to be sitting outside in the elements. Because of this, as well as the simple fact that animals may get under the playhouse, it's a good idea to use a non-wood base under the structure.

A couple recommendations for ground preparation are a cement block or a metal mesh pad. These will help keep animals from burrowing under the playhouse, as well as protect it from the ground collapsing under it. Along with this, make sure you level out the ground you plan to use. If it's not level, the playhouse will have a variety of problems in the long-term.

Prepping the Wood

Make sure that you have wood that is properly prepped. Whether you buy pre-treated wood or you plan to use wood stain and water-resistant treatments yourself, this helps keep the wood remain strong, structurally sound, and looking great for a long time. Be sure you’re prepared with brushes, trays, a drop cloth, and the proper amount of stain or clear-coating.

Have a Plan

If you're making a playhouse, you need to have a plan. Whether you use blueprints you found online or create your own design, a good plan allows you to see exactly what you need for materials, tools, and more. If you try to build without a plan in place, pieces may not line up correctly, you might end up with something that collapses easily, or you may realize that you don't quite know what to do next.

Get Help

One of the biggest mistakes many make when they're creating a log playhouse is that they don't get help on the project. While you can do most of the construction yourself, it's a good idea to get a friend or family member to help you with the larger pieces. This will save you time, energy, and stress. If you know someone with experience in this type of construction, that is even more beneficial.

Upkeep

When you're done with the construction, you're not done with the playhouse. You need to make sure that you keep up with the wood throughout the seasons. If you want the structure to last for years, treat it like you would a true log home. Check the logs for mold, mildew, and rot yearly. Make sure to fix any cracks in the wood when you notice them. Keep the area around the structure clean and free of excess foliage.

Creating a log cabin playhouse allows your kids their own space to play, learn, and grow. If you're interested in wood construction projects, this is a fun and interesting project to get you going. With the right tools, some time, and a lot of perspiration, your children will have the perfect place to get away.
